My animal rescue
efforts began with a sparrow when I was a little girl.
There was always a stray dog or cat that would come
home. My Mom knew
of a women who would take the ones we couldn't keep
& find homes for
them. This lady had lots of land to keep them until
they went to their
permanent homes. A few years earlier we
had a stray cat that had had
kittens & my parents had a fight about them.
My Mom called the pound
taking all but one away. |
 |
I will never
forget that day & vowed I would try my best to
save as many as I could. My rescues are
not limited to dogs & cats. Possum babies that
mama's have bit hit by a car. (The easiest &
safest way to pick up a possum is with a stick.
Place it near their tail & most of the time they
curl around it.) Turtles trying to cross a busy road
seem to need a helping hand so not to turn into a
waffle. |
 |
Those turtles keep me
busy when they start to come out! One
time I even saved a little crayfish that got washed up
from the ditch!
He wasn't very willing to be saved, I guess he thought
I was gonna cook
him! Baby squirrels that get knocked down
from a tree. Little ones
like that go to licensed rehab individuals.
Driving down our road when
one deer runs out I slow down because I know his buddy
is right behind
him. |

Before moving to
the country I had more cats than dogs.
After
moving to the country It seemed as if the dogs put out
a secret
invitation to all homeless, needy dogs.
It's a sad fact that some
people dump their pets off in the country when they
don't want them. I
have certain dogs that I use as "bait" or
more so as a welcoming
committee when a dog is scared to come to me after
being living on their
on for who knows how long. |
 |
I have my dog go up to
them. They have their
doggy conversation. A few minutes later
the two of them come up to me & then we all hop in
the vehicle. It's as if my dog told them I
was okay & I would take care of them.
I've seen dogs that could follow all commands,
housebroken. But then there are no lost
ads placed & no replies to found ads or responses
to found notices at animal control. |
 |
Some people just no
longer care to be responsible any longer.
The
puppy/kitten was cute but they didn't think they'd
have to pay vet bills or
have it for 5,10+ years. There's no
commitment. That's where I step
in. My no kill kennel/shelter always has
approximately 75
dogs/puppies. Most of the adult dogs are between
7-10 years old.
Cats/kittens usually are about 50. Most of
the cats are over 10 years
old. I spay & neuter all my pets.
Kittens & puppies come my way from those they dump
them or were born in the woods. |
 |
Last year I drove by
this house that had a bunch of puppies sitting
on the porch. I dropped off some stray to
keep them warm. A few days
later I noticed there were a bunch more in the back
barn that were
smaller. It turns out there were 3 litters
from 3 moms & 2 dads.
Only one dog belong to the elderly lady.
The other dad belonged to a
man down the road & the moms were strays that
someone had dumped or were born to dumped moms. |
 |
The moms were very
gun-shy. I paid for all the medical
treatment, vaccines, spaying & neutering of all
the puppies & found homes for 10 of them.
Four of them were too antisocial to be adopted at the
time. They would need "special
homes." I've been trying desperately to
catch the mom's. Animal control was able
to trap one. There have been two more
litters. Two in the first one.
Four in the next. One puppy went to a home
at the home of a sibling of his from last year. |
 |
I also rescue many
hunting dogs that are no longer needed by their
masters. In a way I can tell why these ones were
dumped. They don't
seem like the hunting type. They are so sweet
& goofy! They come to me
skin & bones, scared of their own shadow.
One didn't wag his tail for a
week. But I insisted on calling him
"Happy." That first tail wag
brought tears of happiness to my eyes.
Rescues are very grateful &
make wonderful pets. |
 |
I do not work
outside the home as I am on disability which isn't
much. After paying house bills the rest go
towards the animals. I
buy most things second hand/thrift store.
My vet is cheaper than most
but still the costs add up. |
 |
My dream is to
help those in my community with their pet bills &
travel needs to the vet. Everyone should
be able to enjoy & be able to afford a pet. |
 |
Three years ago I was
almost killed in a horrific motor vehicle
accident. The man responsible is in hiding
so going to civil court is
up in the air right now. They said I should have died.
For a long time
I questioned why I was spared. Well, when
I look in all my little
babies eyes, I no longer question. I have
unfinished business. They
need me. Please help me further my animal
rescue efforts. Thank you
for taking your time to read this & possibly
helping me with your
donation. God bless you.
