Desire to Preserve Grave Sites and Provide
Landscaping

I am a young man who is
trying to find a way to honor my grandmother's memory.
She spent her life doing things for other people.
I didn't realize how remarkable her life was until
after she was gone. She was a member of the
Civilian Air Patrol during WWII, kept her family of
three children together after her husband died from a
heart attack at a young age, and remained a leader in
her community at a time when women were not supposed
to be powerful, let alone have an opinion of their
own. |

Since her death, I have
been tending to my grandmother's grave every week.
During that time, I have noticed countless people's
gravesites and the fact that week after week they go
untended. I stand in front of the tombstones and
learn so much about the people interred there just by
the dates and loved ones buried around them.....for
instance, seeing that a mother and child died during
childbirth, or that an entire family died...most
likely from diseases such as influenza. |

I have cleaned grave
markers, removed debris, hauled in mulch and topsoil,
planted flowers and shrubs, supplied small religious
statuettes, and completed other landscaping at various
cemeteries.....all tasks which are not included in the
infamous phrase used by cemetery associations
"perpetual care". This is becoming an
overwhelming task financially. I never mind the
time or energy. All of these people deserve it.
Can any of us imagine being forgotten when our lives
come to a close? |

any way to continue this endeavor, it would be greatly
appreciated. My goal is to be able to tend every
grave at the cemeteries I visit in three counties near
my home. At a time when there is so much hate in
the world, finding some peace and fulfillment through
generosity is what I want my life to mean. If I
learned one thing from my grandmother, it was the
virtue of selflessness. |
